Inject Some Color Into Your Digital Photographs

Even though it is much better idea to get the color right when taking a photograph, especially from a visualization and quality perspective, this is not always possible. It could be that there is not enough time, or the conditions or your equipment might not allow for it, or it could be that you only truly recognize the images true potential when you see it on your computer screen. Therefore, in this article, we will take a look at some of the ways in which you can use your computer to enhance the colors of your photos.

Getting the Balance Right

Most photo editing software packages will allow you to adjust the color balance directly on the captured image, or by making use of an adjustment layer. You will find that you are presented with 3 color sliders, which are usually - Cyan/Red, Yellow/Blue and Magenta/Green. It is worth noting that these pairs are complementary colors, so for example, the image has too much of a magenta tint, you can adjust the slider towards green, which will balance the color away from magenta.

Saturation and Hue

The Saturation/Hue feature that you will often find on some of the more detailed photo editing apps, and the hue feature allows you to shift all of the colors in the image along the color spectrum. This can solve some color related problems, however, it is worth noting that the overall effects can be a little on the unpredictable side, as well as being difficult to control. On the other hand, the Saturation slider will increase or decrease the strength of all the colors in the photo, which can add much more vibrancy to the color of photos that are shot on an overcast day for example.

Brightness and Contrast

These adjustments are often the easiest for novices to understand, but the can also be the most destructive when it comes to the quality of the image. This is due to the fact that increasing the contrast can push both light and dark pixels off the scale, which will have the effect of leaving the shadowy areas of your pictures bleached out or blocked in.

As you can see, there is so much more to editing your photos than just cropping or removing red eye or blemishes. The quality of your final image can really be changed by simply adjusting some of the color elements such as the saturation and brightness, but for many people, it is just a case of trial and error in order to find the right levels.
